MIAG has embarked on a new project titled: 'Women Health and Well-being Hub' in January, 2010.
This project contributes to improving leadership and vision in health promotion and chronic disease prevention across women from different ethno-cultural communities who live/work in Peel and surrounding areas, specifically in Mississauga. It addresses the risk factors that lead to chronic disease and it provides a culturally appropriate program to control these factors. Participants are integrated in a one station healthy life style program which adapts the holistic approach of maintaining their health and well-being.
This highly demanded program is delivering at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre on Saturdays from 12:00 noon-2:00pm and on Sundays from 6:00pm-8:00pm in two different groups of women. More than thirty women from the diverse communities are attending each program regularly. They extremely enjoy the aerobics session which runs for 45 minutes. They said: We feel alive, energetic and happy!

After the aerobics session participants are exposed to knowledge and information sharing of chronic disease prevention, the negative impact of tobacco, substance and alcohol misuse, first aids and CPR, stress management, self-confidence and other well-being factors.

Women highly enjoy introducing different healthy culturally specific recipes through kitchen demonstrations which is the third component of the program. They think it is a good idea to change one or more unhealthy ingredients in their cultural food to prepare more healthy dishes without losing the good taste of the food. This healthy kitchen follows Canada's Food Guide.

The pre-program and post- program questionnaires are required to fill out by the participants to examine the impact of the program on their lifestyle. They are encouraged to use a daily Health Log to keep track of work out, eating healthy food and having some fun!

A similar program is run simultaneously to children who accompany their moms to the WHWH. They have a lot of fun jumping up and down with their Child Minder and drawing vegetables and fruits. The program has a ripple effect on other family members by moms, spouses and sisters who are participating in the program. Click here to see the testimonial
