Second Brother and Sister Program
The Second Brother and Sister Program is a new pilot initiative funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation that provides free, compassionate support to vulnerable community members. Operated through a dedicated hotline by a Program Coordinator and a multilingual team of Personal Assistants (Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, and Tamil), the program responds to urgent situations while offering personalized support that can have a life-changing impact.
The program primarily supports women experiencing violence, isolated seniors, and persons with disabilities. Through the hotline, the Program Coordinator conducts needs assessments and connects clients with appropriate services and supports. The initiative aims to strengthen social connections, reduce isolation, and foster a greater sense of belonging within the community.
Services include assistance with safe relocation, navigating essential services, attending appointments, applying for social assistance, opening bank accounts, enrolling children in school, and completing other critical daily tasks that can be overwhelming during times of crisis. The program also provides essential support to seniors and persons with disabilities, particularly during evenings and weekends when other services may be unavailable. Seniors can receive friendly home visits, safety check-ins, grocery delivery, and accompaniment to walk-ins and appointments - all at no cost.
