MIAG Centre for Diverse Women & Families hosted an unforgettable Gala Event on May 13, 2023, at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre, commemorating the successful completion of two impactful programs: Self Employment for Immigrant Women and Parenting for Success. The occasion not only surpassed all expectations but also marked a remarkable achievement for MIAG and the communities it serves. With an astounding turnout of 402 participants, the Gala Event exuded a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, embodying the spirit of empowerment and inclusivity.

The celebration showcased the achievements and milestones accomplished in the Parenting for Success project, a family program aimed at enhancing parenting skills, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The program provided free training for parents and caregivers from diverse communities and their children, covering various family and parenting-related topics in English, Arabic, Spanish, and Mandarin, benefiting residents of Peel. Led by a children's specialist, the children's program focused on developing social skills through engaging games and activities. Workshops were delivered by professionals, addressing subjects such as children's mental health and parent-school engagement. "It's hard to imagine how far the program has come, and it has touched the lives of over 700 parents and their children. It's truly amazing to see how language and culture-specific programming can resonate so profoundly with diverse community members," said Yasmine Behiry, Program Manger.

During the Gala, the spotlight also shone on the accomplishments of 27 inspiring women entrepreneurs who had completed the Self Employment for Immigrant Women program funded by the Mariam Assefa Fund and the Tamarack Institute. These exceptional individuals showcased their diverse businesses, highlighting the wealth of talent and creativity within the immigrant community. Adding to the festivities, three entrepreneurs from the same program offered their catering services, treating attendees to a delightful culinary experience. One standout participant entrepreneur even took charge of overseeing all the digital marketing efforts leading up to the event, a testament to the program's capacity to nurture leadership and initiative.

To enrich the attendees' experience further, MIAG thoughtfully arranged an array of engaging activities. Children attending the event were entertained with a lively art and craft program, allowing parents to participate in the Gala knowing their children were having a great time too. Cake decoration and a captivating magic show provided entertainment for guests of all ages, making the evening truly memorable for everyone present.

MIAG's commitment to fostering a supportive community was evident through its thoughtful raffle draws. A total of 24 draws, each valued at $50, featured products and services from the entrepreneurs supported by MIAG. By pre-purchasing these items, MIAG not only showed its belief in the potential of these businesses but also encouraged attendees to actively participate in supporting the entrepreneurs. This initiative not only added to the excitement of the Gala but also underscored the organization's dedication to creating opportunities for economic growth and prosperity within the immigrant community.

The Gala Event hosted by MIAG stands as a testament to the transformative impact of non-profit organizations. By empowering immigrant women and parents through programs that nurture entrepreneurship and enhance parenting skills, MIAG has demonstrated its commitment to building a more inclusive and vibrant community. The success of this event serves as an inspiration and a call for continued support of organizations like MIAG, whose tireless efforts create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals.

On the morning of May 23, something truly special happened. Over cups of coffee, plates of delicious breakfast, and the company of generous hearts, we gathered for our first-ever Breakfast Fundraising Event—and what a beautiful success it was! This wasn’t just about raising funds; it was about raising hope, building community, and sharing a meal with people who share our belief in the work we do. As we reflect on that day, we’re filled with deep gratitude for every guest, every volunteer, and especially, every donor who helped turn this vision into reality.

In every neighborhood, there’s a quiet power that often goes unnoticed—the power of people helping people. Whether it’s offering a warm meal, a listening ear, or simply a smile, these everyday acts of kindness are the building blocks of something much greater: a strong, peaceful, and united community. In a multicultural environment, where different languages, traditions, and histories meet, this spirit of helping becomes even more meaningful. It fosters understanding, encourages respect, and reminds us that diversity is not a challenge, it’s a gift. When we work together across cultures, we don’t just support individuals, we build bridges, strengthen families, and create communities where everyone feels they belong.
